The rebirth of the Earth after the long winter is a time of powerful, and very positive, life-giving energy. Try some of these small spells and charms. A protective egg Charm Take an egg and, by poking small holes at each end of it, empty it out. Fill the egg with Cinquefoil leaf and Dogwood, then tape the holes shut. You can decorate the egg with Runes or symbols of protection, or you can leave it natural. Your home and property will be protected. Dandelion Magic Pick a white dandelion puff on the night of the full moon. Charge the dandelion with a wish, call to the four quarters, and blow your wish into the wind. An Ostara Love Spell Now, a love spell is not to MAKE someone love you, Witches believe that that sort of manipulation of a person is wrong. Love spells are done to show you your future mate in a premonition, or to draw the right love to you, of their own free will- basically giving Mr. or Mrs. right a gentle push in the right direction. Read the spell over, gather the ingredients listed, then at night before you go to sleep, recite the spell and perform the actions as you recite them: "Of violets and Lavender, take each a few, Enclose them with Myrtle of dark green hue. Prepare the altar with the God and Goddess candles and the supplies for casting the circle. Include a soil-filled cauldron, a sword, a small shovel, a small pot, a few seeds of your favorite flower or herb, a Corn Dolly, and a Grape Dolly. The Corn Dolly should be dressed in white. The Grape Dolly should be dressed in green. The cauldron should be placed in front of the altar. Begin by casting the circle. Say: "Here I am on this day, Ostara, Lady Day, Rite of Eostre, the Vernal Equinox, and the first day of the planting season. I am here to understand life, death, and rebirth, and to give reverence to those who have endured each." Bow your head to think about how Ostara fits in one of the three groups above and how it fits in the Wheel of the Year. Say: "I stand at the gate between the living and the dead on this night when both light and dark are equal. I am here to witness the union of my Goddess, Mother Earth, the waxing Lady of the Moon, and of our God, Green Man, the waxing Lord of the Sun. Conception. . . a necessary transition on the Wheel of the Year." Lay the Dollies next to each other on the pillow. Say: "Now is the time of the Great Rite between the beloved Maiden, one of the three faces of my Goddess, and her consort, the beloved Sun King, one of the three faces of my God. I watch as the Goddess is impregnated by the God with the seeds of conception." Unite the blade of the sword with the depth of the cauldron symbolizing the Great Rite. Leave the sword standing. Hold the God candle and mingles the flame with the Goddess candle. Replace these on the altar and set them closer than they were before. Say: "The Elder Gods wish to bestow upon us the gift of knowledge. Thus they shall speak." Hold the Grape Dolly and Corn Dolly up high, one in each hand. Say: "These wise words are their gifts. "There is a time for ever purpose under the heavens above. Now is the time to sow that which will be reaped come fall and winter. Now is the time of the conception of the Divine Child which is necessary to keep the Wheel of the Year turning. As I plant these seeds of child and harvest, each dependant upon the other, the Wheel of the Year turns, the land also ready to take to it seeds. It is now your time to begin your sowing of seeds, material, spiritual, and symbolic, to ready you for the coming seasons. So mote it be. !" Place the Dollies closer to each other on the pillow. Say: "The Gods have shown me the way. Now, on this day of Ostara, at this time of planting and beginning, I shall sow my own seeds for the coming seasons." Use the small shovel to transfer soil from the cauldron to the small pot. As you are plating the seeds, you should be thinking about your goals as though they were the seeds. You can now conclude the ritual. Say: "May these newly planted seeds, material, spiritual, and symbolic, bring to me plentiful fruits and bounties." Close the circle. Serve yourself hard boiled eggs, honey cakes, and egg nog. You can leave the cauldron and sword on the altar until Beltane to remind you of the seeds sewn on this day. This Sabbat is a time for fertility rituals, and the cutting of spring's first blossoms. The altar and the circle should be decorated with a variety of fresh flowers. Set up the altar with your usual tools, including a green potted plant, and the cauldron placed somewhere in the circle. The cauldron may be filled with fresh water and floating flowers. Light the altar candles and the incense, and cast the sacred circle. Invoke the God and the Goddess. Kneel before the altar, facing East, and gaze at the plant. Recognize it not only as a plant, but as a symbol of the awakening earth. Say: "Blessed is the Goddess, our Mother, our provider. Now, the dark days of winter are past, and the world grows green once more. As life awakens from it's slumber, and is renewed by the power of the God and the Goddess, we thank them for all we have received from them." Touch the plant. Connect with its energies, and feel its life. Say: "This plant is representative of the awakening of life after its long winter slumber. May I learn to be kind to all creatures, great and small, and may I bear in my heart a warmth and understanding of all living things. Mother Goddess, Father God, teach me to revere the earth and all its treasures always." Take part in any magick or seasonal activities that you had planned. Tradition on Ostara is the decoration of eggs. Hold the simple feast and banish the sacred circle. Place the paper, pen, and seed on the altar pentacle. Cast the circle. Ring the bell three times. Say: "The Goddess has freed Herself from the icy prison of winter. Now is the greening, when the fragrance of flowers drifts on the breeze. The Maiden displays her beauty through colorful spring flowers and their sweet aromas. The Sun wakes from His long winter's nap. The God stretches and rises, eager in His youth, bursting with the promise of summer. I welcome thee, beautiful spring!" Light the light green candle. Say: "Springtime is seedtime. Now is the time to plant that which I wish to come to flower. Spring brings hope and joy; expectations for desires realized; and inspiration for new ideas. Life is brought into balance and I am reborn with the earth's renewal. Now the darkness of Winter and the past is cast behind. I look only to that which lies ahead and what I wish to bring forth." Sit in front of the altar and meditate on what seed of an idea you would like to plant, to grow into an opportunity. It could be a skill or personal quality you'd like to acquire, or an opportunity to do or create something. When you have decided what desire you'd like to nurture in the coming year, write it down on the paper. Stand up and say: "Lord and Lady, receive this seed. Let it germinate in my mind and heart. Let it prosper and grow into maturity, For I will care for it and encourage it in Your names." Light the paper from the light green candle, holding it so that as it burns, the ashes fall into the soil in the plant pot. With the athame, mix the ashes into the soil. Pick up the plant seed and concentrate on it and your desire. Place the seed in the center of the pot and close the soil over on top of it. Water it with blessed ("Holy" water. Say: "This seed I place in the womb of the earth That it may become a part of that earth, A part of life and a part of me." Ring the bell three times. Cakes and Ale. Close the circle. Place the plant in a room you go into frequently, and take care of it whenever needed, knowing that as it grows and blossoms so too will your desire grow and blossom. May we cross through the sacred that we might attain the holy. May we attain the holy that we might be blessed in all things. and asperses herself and the others. She then puts the bowl down. She pours some lighter fluid on the briquettes in the pr, and lights them, saying: Shining Lady, unite us all, for by worshipping at a common hearth we are made one family, one people. Queen of the hearth, your household is here. May we pray with a good fire. She starts to sing, and the others join in. Burn on our hearth, o fire of our family, Shine bright for those who gather around you. Burn on our hearth, o fire of our family, Shine bright for those who gather around you. Here in the center a fire is burning sending warmth through all of space, answering to our hearts' yearning, bestowing splendor on people and place. Place your feet with measured stride, in ancient rhythm. All process to the ritual site, with the Priest in the lead, followed by the Fire Tender. She carries the pr, and the Priest carries the sacrifice. The honey-milk is carried by someone else, and the plate with the silver by a non-member is one is present, or by a member if not. Once they arrive at the site, all stop. The Priest says: Kyi spndntm All: We are here to worship the gods! The Fire Tender puts the pr down and sits to its north, and the Priest puts the pitcher of honey milk just to the east of the ngwnis. He goes to the speltputs down the sacrifice there, and stands facing east over the speltbr> The Main Ritual The Fire Tender offers butter to the pr, while the Priest says: With the burning of the fire we take possession of the land it lights, of the world it warms. The Fire Tender pours some lighter fluid on the briquettes on the ngwnis, and then uses a match to transfer fire from the cauldron to the ngwnis, while the Priest says: In the worlds very center we light our fire, here where the sacred and the mundane meet Here we light a living flame. Receive our offerings and bless our rites. The Fire Tender blows on the briquette to enflame the tinder. As she does this, the Priest says: With our prayers we feed you, with the breath of our mouths. Once the fire is going well, the Priest says: Listen to my words; see the cosmos about you. He sings: The waters support and surround us He makes a semi-circle with both his hands, extending upwards from a point. He sings: The land extends about us He puts his hands in the middle of the top of the semi-circle, palms downward, and brings them out to the ends of the semi-circle. He sings: The sky stretches out above us. He makes another semi-circle upwards from the edge of the other one, with his hands meeting at its top. He sings: At the center burns a living flame. He puts both of his hands, joined together, in the center of the circle he has drawn (and thus the center of the flat area he has also drawn), and brings them in to touch his heart. He sings: May all the Kindreds bless us. May our worship be true. All: May our worship be true. The Priest: May our actions be just. All: May our actions be just. The Priest: May our love be pure. All: May our love be pure. Blessings, and honor, and worship to the Holy Ones. Someone sets up the image of Meitros. The Fire Tender puts butter on the ngwnis, saying: Binder of Friends, who brings one to another, placing the hand of each into each: Meitro, be our go-between with the gods: may our path be smooth to them; may their be smooth to us. Ghladh pnthbr> [Make the path smooth!] Open the way! All say: Ghladh pnthbr> Open the gates! This is done two more times. The Priest then sets up the image of Xaryomen. He goes to the ngwnis and pours butter on it. He says: Xaryomen Dhpotei, All: Xaryomen, Lord of the Law of the People. The Priest: Sumeneznz prihonz doxte-r All: Giver of well-disposed friends. The Priest: Sus Wo-r zdhi. All: Be our good Herdsman. The Priest: Wedhe no-s som All: Bring us together. The Priest: Xrneu no-s s. All: Make us one. The Priest: Toi somoge spendemes. All: May we worship you as one people! Each time he prays, he pours more butter. The person with the dish of silver and dimes, takes it to the regwes, removes the tile, and pours the silver in silently. They go to the speltnd purify themselves with the water in the bowl before returning to their place. The Fire Tender offers butter on the ngwnis, saying: May all the Holy Ones come to us as we worship them here. May they come to us on the shining path as we call to them, with proper words. All: Holy Ones, we worship you with sweet offering. All sing: "Hail all the Gods." The Fire Tender (or another women; she'll be called the "Xausriestess" stands and faces the east. The Priest says: With fallen fetters, in red-robed splendor, stream forth, Dawn Maiden, return the herds. She pours out the remaining honey milk (she should have poured half or less before this point) in front of the beribboned pole, and says: Xauscome to us as cow, not as mare, opening the mountain's mouth, pouring forth the white streaming water. Xausmaiden, open the way for the sun to rise and light the earth. Stream forth, dawn's light. The Priest says: Lady Xausdo not hold the sun back. Open your cloak and let her rise, with the Twins attending, one on each side. Let her rise, attended by her maidens. Let her rise, and illumine the world. The Xausriestess goes to the far side of the Xausole, clockwise, and faces the space. She takes the pitcher of the Waters and the pole, Waters in her left hand and the pole in her right, and holds the pole up. Those in the space say: Dawn has returned, out of the night, arising from the waters at the edge of the world, coming as cow, not as mare. The Xausriestess goes to the entrance of the space, and stops between the Twins poles. The Priest says: Attend her, Twins. Assist her, Diwun> Ride with her on either side where she opens the gates of dawn. The Xausriestess enters the space and puts the pole in the holder between the images of Pso-n and Xaryomen. She puts the Waters down by the ngwnis and returns to her place. The Fire Tender offers butter on the ngwnis, while the Priest says: We offer to Xausbr> with glad welcome. Illumine the land, Shining Maiden. Open the gateway for the sun each day as is right. Accept this offering and our praises. The Priest lifts the sacrifice and says: This horse has come willingly, eagerly, to the place of sacrifice bedecked with gold in celebration and beauty. He puts it down, uncovers it and sprinkles water on it, using his right hand, three times, saying: A pure offering is this, without blemish or stain, fit for the Diwun> He puts down the bowl of water, and picks up the bowl of barley in his left hand. He scatters grain from it three times with his right hand onto the sacrifice, saying: Be blessed and fed with the fruits of the earth. He then picks up the main sacrifice (that is, the top plate) and brings it clockwise about the space, carrying the bowl of barley as well. Each person takes some barley and throws it on the sacrifice with their right hand. When he returns to his place, he puts the sacrifice down. He puts down the bowl, holds up the sacrifice, and says: A proper offering is this, as it is right to give. We offer this horse to the Diwun> He picks up the knife in his left hand and, carrying the animal in his right, he goes to a point between the fires and a little to the south. He squats and puts the plate and knife down. The Fire Tender motions to the N, who comes and faces her. When the N has arrived, he holds the head of the axe down towards The Fire Tender, who pours butter on it and says: Pweti! The N goes clockwise around the space, holding the axe upright and out. As he walks, The Fire Tender strikes the bell, and the others join in. They increase the tempo and volume as he walks. When the N returns to the sacrifice, he stands and faces The Fire Tender. She says: Pweti! The N brings the axe down hard against the sacrifice, and then lifts his axe to a vertical position in front of him and returns to his place. When he hits the sacrifice, everyone stops making noise. The Priest quickly cuts a slice from the right side of the bread, using his right hand. He cuts this in half in turn. He puts the top half into the altar fire, saying: Diwun> here is your share. Sit down at our table, and see the meal we have spread out for you. Hed welkwe! Eat and be strong! He holds the bottom half over the fire a moment, then cuts it in two. He eats the top half and gives the bottom half to The Fire Tender. The rest is then distributed. Any extra is burned in the fire or put aside for disposal after the ritual. The Priest pours mead at the base of the ngwnis, saying: All the Kindreds, be honored in our midst. We pour out our offering to you, like living water, like grain from a bag. Drink deeply of the gifts we give. Pnkwudeiwomus gyhi-gyhbr> All: To-d. He returns to his place. He says: Have the folk brought praise? The Fire Tender says: They have! Praise offerings are then made by those who wish. When the last offering has been made, the Priest takes the piece of bread from the bottom plate, holds it up, and says: Gods and Goddesses, Holy Ancestors, Spirits of this place: If anything that we have done here has offended you, If anything we have done here has been incomplete, If anything we have done here has not been done in the proper manner, accept this final offering in recompense. He breaks the bread into pieces, and puts once piece on the ngwnis, one on the pr, one in front of the image of Xausone in front of each of the Twins, one in front of the image of Pso-n, one in front of the image of Xaryomen, and one in the regwes. He breaks the rest up and scatters it about the space as an offering to the Land Spirits. The Fire Tender then says: Diviner, take the omens. After the divination has been announced, The Fire Tender says: We hear what the Kindreds have to say, and are made wise by it. The Priest pours the Waters into the large bowl and takes it to the fire. He holds the bowl over the fire for a moment and then raises it and says: Nekt spete! Behold the Waters of Life! All reply: Behold the Waters of Life! The Priest holds it over the fire again, raises it again, and says: Nekt spete! Behold the Waters of Life! All reply: Behold the Waters of Life! The Priest holds it over the fire a third time, raises it, and says: Nekt spete! Behold the Waters of Life! All reply: Behold the Waters of Life! The Priest says: With the gates opened and the offerings made, we have established the bonds of hospitality with the Kindreds. And, in return, they have given us this blazing water. He sings: Fire in water, water in fire, Bring inspiration Bring us your power Bring us to life immortal. All sing: Fire in water, water in fire, Bring inspiration Bring us your power Bring us to life immortal. The Fire Tender says: What the Kindreds have given us, we distribute freely. The Priest ladles some of the Waters into the bowl with the mead and the bread and in the bowl in front of the deity images, while The Fire Tender says: May the Kindreds always receive their due. The Waters are then are distributed. After all have drunk, the Priest says: Filled with the Mystery of Fire in Water we rest in the presence of the Kindreds. There is a pause while all meditate on the divine presence which fills them. Then The Fire Tender makes a final offering of incense into the pr, while the Priest says: Blessed ones, may you always be with us. We give thanks to the Kindreds We thank all the Kindreds for their many gifts. All: Usmgwrtins dmes! The Fire Tender makes an offering of butter and the Priest says: You who rise, who, each day newly young, bring light and warmth to those who worship you. Be true, Xausbr> uphold the Xartus, and we will always have occasion to offer to you, as we have done today, and as we do now. Tyo gwrtins dmes! All respond: Tyo gwrtins dmes! The Fire Tender makes an offering of butter on the fire, while the Priest says: Xaryomen, we give you thanks for your presence and blessings. May we grow and flourish under your benevolent gaze. All: Tyo gwrtins dmes! The Fire Tender makes an offering of butter on the fire, while the Priest says: Meitro, this butter to send you on your way, a gift which will lighten your journey. Remember our hospitality, speak well of us, and return at our invitation, bearing the gods in your train. The Fire Tender offers butter on the ngwnis. When it is burned, she takes a coal from the ngwnis and puts it into the pr, saying: The true altar of the people is the hearth. She then extinguishes the ngwnis with some of the water from the pitcher. The Priest then says: Extinguished without but burning within. All: The living fire flames within us. The person who had offered the silver goes to the regwes and, with their left hand, and with their face averted, puts the tile back on. They returns to their place and purify themselves. The Fire Tender offers butter to the pr, saying: Lady of Fire, Queen of the hearth, who by rights receives the last, bless and guard all those who worship you whether in their home or without whether alone or with others whether thinking of you or engaged in business. Shining One, receive this offering. All: Tyo gwrtins dmes! When the butter is burned, she extinguishes the fire by pouring water from the pitcher on it and then putting the top of the cauldron on. A corn doll dressed in white. A grapevine doll dressed in green. Place the cauldron in front of your alter. Begin by casting your circle. 'I am here on this day, (Ostara, Lady Day , Rite of Eostre, the Vernal Equinox) and the first day of planting season. My presence is to understand life, death and the rebirth and to give reverence to those who have and continue to endure these.' Take the time now to meditate how Ostara belongs to each of these groups and how it fits in the Wheel of the Year. 'I stand at the gate between the living and the dead on this night that light and dark are in balance. To witness the union of My Goddess and my God a necessary transition to the Wheel of the Year.' Lay the dolls next to each other on the pillow. Sweep area, starting in the North and moving deosil, with your magickal broom to cleanse the Circle area and "sweep away" any lingering negative energies. Set up the Quarter candles (North-Green, East-Yellow, South-Red, West-Blue) and/or other items symbolizing the elements at the Four Quarters. Set up your altar as desired, and face it to the North, covering it with a white, light green, lemon yellow or a pale pink altar cloth. For this ceremony, decorate the altar with Springtime flowers of any color (silk are acceptable), along with a Spring basket filled with brightly-colored Pagan Ostara Eggs. To do some egg-coloring magic, hard-boil some white eggs. Draw symbols on them using a white crayon or wax pencil. These symbolsrunes, hearts, dollar signs, or wordsshould represent what you want to manifest in your life. Mix food colors to dye the eggs, and add a bit of salt and vinegar to some boiling water. Let the water cool slightly, and add the food coloring to the water. Dip the eggs in the dye with a spoon. If you wish, you may repeat the dipping in order to create more vivid colors. The symbols you drew on the eggs in white crayon will stand out against the vivid colors. Dry the eggs on paper towels then refrigerate them. Each day thereafter, peel and eat an egg and reflect on the wishes that you hope to manifest. Many craft traditions, covens, and solitaries have devised their own rituals for awakening Mother Earth at this time. Many of these can be traced back to England. One common practice is to walk through a natural area, tap the earth three times with a staff or wand, and make a joyful noise to welcome the Goddess's return. This ritual is performed three times in keeping with the sacred number of many of the Pagan sects from western European countries. Now is not only a good time to awaken Mother Earth, but also to awaken ourselves. We should ask: Are we only going through the motions now? Or are we reawakening our spiritual selves, and seeing anew all the magical possibilities of spring? The ancient Celtic calendar only had three months, but in 1752 it was reconstructed with four months and eight holidays steaming from ancient festivals. In this more modern Celtic calendar, the Vernal Equinox marks the point of mid-spring. In our Gregorian calendar, meanwhile, this day is the first day of spring. And among the Teutonic peoples, this day was the time for a festival of spring called Ostara. Ostara is named after the goddess of spring whose name was Ostera among the Germans, and Eostre or Eastre among the Anglo-Saxons. This goddess's name is derived from the word for "dawn." It should be obvious at this point that Eastre also lent her name to the major Christian spring holiday that celebrates the rebirth of ChristEaster. It is a place where spirit becomes whole and brings forth creation. It is a womb, a fertile hollow wherein the male and female aspects of he divine meet, unite and spark new life. At Ostara we call them Eostre's or Easter Baskets and at Beltane we call them May Baskets. They are the same vessel. You may want to recite a blessing to the divine creators as you place eggs in a basket at Ostara to honor this sabbat of life renewed by remembering from where all life flows. Egg Basket Blessing "The cycle of life again comes to pass, I place an egg all nested in grass; in a basket of straw, the Goddess's womb, a place to meet God, who's returned from the tomb. Close your eyes. Relax and center yourself by taking deep slow breaths. Now journey inward. Imagine that you are in a hilly countryside. It is just before dawn at the beginning of Springtime. The land is nearing the end of its Wintertime slumber. You face the East and watch the Sun as it begins to rise. Rays of light shimmer onto the land and into the sky. Experience the beautiful colors of light that is the Dawn. Now, as the glowing disc of the Sun becomes visible above the hills, you see the Goddess Ostara appear on the land in the distance in the East. She is beginning to move toward you. As She moves, the land awakens with new life. You see Her coming toward you in the form of a Beautiful Maiden. You see Her radiant face and flowing gown. She is carrying a golden basket filled with colored eggs. Beside Her is Her companion, a frisky magical Rabbit. As They come closer to you, you see that with each step that They take, the land around them bursts into new life and grows green. New grasses sprout from the ground. Herbs flourish. Trees grow new leaves. You call out a welcome to Them and to the Spring they bring. As you meet face to face, you see that the Goddess Ostara and the Rabbit are both smiling a welcome to you. Ostara then holds Her golden basket toward you and invites you to chose one of the eggs in it as a gift of Spring. You notice that each egg has a different color. You see the beautiful array of choices. You feel more drawn to one of the eggs than the others and choose it. Now you hold the egg that you have selected in both of your hands. You first focus on its color and reflect on what that color means to you. ..... Then Ostara invites you to ask this Sacred Egg to give you a message about personal growth. You ask this and then are quiet as you pay attention to whatever words, symbols, sensations, impressions, and/or other forms of message emerge. ...... Ostara now invites you to take this Sacred Egg and its power of new growth into yourself. You hold it to your heart and as you do this, you absorb it into your being. It is also believed to function as a mild restorative for lost energy or for minor illnesses and lack of sexual drive. The origins of honegar are unclear, but seem traceable back to the Teutonic folk practices of at least 500 years ago. You will need: 20 ounces raw honey 20 ounces apple cider vinegar Large saucepan Wooden Spoon 1-quart Canning Jars Dont prepare to make more then two jars at a time. The honegar does not go fast unless youre dosing a large number of people. It should be kept refrigerated at all times to keep it fresh. Its also traditional to make this on a full moon and to discard any unused portion with the next full moon when more should be made. As you begin to make the honegar, it is essential to get yourself into a focused mind frame that allows you to create a successful magickal health potion. Though this is an act of cooking, it is still a magickal act. Using no more then a single cupful at a time, place equal parts of the honey and apple cider vinegar into a saucepan. Over medium heat, stir the mixture almost constantly in a clockwise motion with the wooden spoon. Dont turn the burner on too high or you will cause the mixture to boil. As you do this, be sure to concentrate on the purpose of what youre creating to further infuse it with magickal energy. Keep stirring until you feel the heaviness of the mixture start to break up. This means the honey is melting down and blending fully with the vinegar. When all sense of the heaviness is gone and the color of the mixture appears consistent, remove it from the heat. Keep stirring occasionally as the honegar cools. When it is cool enough, pour it into the canning jars and cap it with a snug seal. Be sure to sterilize the jars by placing them on a cookie sheet in a 200-degree oven for about ten minutes like any other canning project. Store the jars of honegar in the refrigerator. In some Wiccan traditions, take the jars outside and charge them under the light of the full moon. Hold them up to the moons light and ask the fullness of the Mother Goddess to infuse the brew with strength and vitality, imparting the blessings of vigorous good health to all who drink. Dose the honegar once or twice a day, using 4-6 tablespoons per an 8 ounce glass of drinking water. If you've got kids -- or even if you don't -- this simple rite is a great way to welcome the season using some things that are readily available in the discount stores at this time of year! Bear in mind, this is meant to be fun and a little bit silly. If you think the Universe has no sense of humor, click the Back button on your browser immediately to exit this page. Difficulty: Average Time Required: 20 minutes For this ritual, you'll need the following: A bag of jellybeans Marshmallow Peeps -- chicks, bunnies, etc. A chocolate rabbit for each participant A glass of milk for each participant Arrange your ritual supplies on your altar so they look pretty. Kids can do this -- typically the chocolate rabbits end up in the center, surrounded by an army of Peeps and several rings of jellybeans. A quick note -- you might want to perform this ritual well in advance of mealtime, or all the kids will be too full of candy to eat a real dinner. 1. First, give everyone present a handful of jellybeans. Point out the different colors in the jellybeans, and what they can represent. As you call out each one, eat the jellybeans in that color. Feel free to be a bit goofy. Say something like: Behold, little jelly eggs, small symbols of the season, How we adore you! Green is for the grass that springs from the land! (eat all the green jellybeans) Yellow is for the sun shining above our heads! (eat all your yellow jellybeans) Red is for the tulips that grow in our garden! (eat your red jellybeans) Pink is for Aunt Martha's new Easter hat! (eat your pink jellybeans) Purple is for the crocuses that sprout along our (eat the purple ones) 2. Continue this until all the colors are gone -- if you really want to have some fun, make the kids take turns naming off the colors and what they mean to them. When they're all gone, call out: Hail! Hail! To the mighty jelly bean of Spring! 3. Next, hand out the marshmallow Peeps. As you do, say: Behold the Peep! The Peep is life, brought back in the spring! Little Peep chickens, we honor you! (bite the Peep chicks) Little Peep bunnies, we honor you! (bite the Peep bunnies) Continue this until the Peeps are all gone -- it's probably a good idea to limit each kid to just two or three Peeps at the most. When the Peeps have all vanished, call out: Hail! Hail! to the mighty Peeps of Spring! 4. Finally, distribute the chocolate rabbits. Say: Behold the great chocolate rabbit! As he hops through the land, he spreads joy and happiness! O, how we adore the chocolate rabbit and his great big chocolate ears! (eat the rabbit's ears) Praise the chocolate rabbit, and his delicious chocolate tail! (eat the rabbit's tail) Honor this chocolate rabbit, and his chocolate hoppity legs! (eat the rabbit's legs) He is a wonderful rabbit, and he is special indeed! (eat the rest of the rabbit When the rabbits are all gone, say: Hail! Hail! to the mighty chocolate rabbit of Spring! 5. Give everyone a glass of milk, and raise your drinks in a toast to these three symbols of the season. To the jelly beans! To the Peeps! To the chocolate rabbit! We drink in your honor!
