Light candles of many colors, and place them around a bowl of clear water, saying: "This day is waiting for me to choose, if I will win or if I will lose. The magic I live in the coming year flows from the gifts I choose. The vows I make, the chances I take, the visions that now fill my heart, grow strong with intention that is honorable and true. Magic come and magic stay, with me now and everyday. Creation be alive in me, bring light to all I see. Fill my heart with peace. Fill my spirit with the universe's light, power, justice, and eternal might. Open my vision of all I see, blessings and benevolence are in me. My powers grow with each new insight picked from wisdoms tree. Magical moments I do see, each day beings me closer to what I will be. By the light of these candles my illumination grows bright; By the waters of life bring to Earth peace and new insight. I welcome the New Year and vow to be valiant, kind, and wise. So mote it be." Notes: Holiday lore: New Year's Day calls for safeguards, augurs, charms, and proclamations. All over the world on this day, people kiss strangers, shoot guns into the air, toll bells, and exchange gifts. Preferred gifts are herring, bread, and fuel for the fire. New Year's Ritual: Sweep, Smudge, and Blessing Jar Sweep your main living area, entryway, or porch, to sweep out the old and allow the new to enter. Smudge around the room using a sweetgrass or sage smudging bundle and a feather. Smudge and say prayers of your own choosing, in each of the four directions, east, west, north, and south: - East represents luminosity, giving individuals the ability to see all that is around them from a spiritual perspective. - West represents the inner heart and soul. - North represents knowledge, wisdom, and purification of the heart, mind, and soul. - South represents the physical self. Say a prayer of thanksgiving, and ask your spirit guides for safety, security, and direction for the coming year. Make a blessig jar: Into a vase, jar, or bottle (which symbolizes protection), put: -a small bag of soil (for abundance) -a coin (for prosperity) -a fabric bag of salt (for purification) -a crystal (for vision) -an arrowhead (for guidance) -a tiny fabric bag of herbs (for grounding) -left over candle (for focus) -a cross (for balance) -a feather (for freedom) -a clipping of hair from each family member (for unity) -an old key (for opportunity) -a small mirror (for truth) -a piece of red paper (for memory) -a small fabric bag of raw rice (for fertility) -a ring (for love) -a rune stone (for communication) -a shell (for choices) -a small fabric bag of loose tea (for awareness) -a small folded fan (for healing) -a rubber band (for flexibility) -a letter that contains this list and what you hope to accomplish this year, sealed inside an envelope (for happiness) You need not have everything on this list, select what is important to you. Seal the jar with the lid, or cover the bottle/vase with a piece of fabric and a rubber band or string. Instead this is to inspire New Spirit for the New Year. It is to purify and to refresh your spirit. It should be performed in the morning and then again in the evening. It should also be done outside, but in this is not possible then inside. In the morning go outside and immerse your hands in the snow (if performing inside then immerse in a bowl or basin of chilled water) until they are chilled through, then anoint your brow and say... "Substance wasted, substance spoiled, now redeemed. Seeing thyself in substance undefiled, forming thyself a new from this frail substance gathered and revived Repeat in the evening. These go in my coffee blender and create a fine blend. Then sprinkled on charcoal and the home is bathed in it. Bleachwater scrub on the altar and all old wax from any previous candles is collected. I'm one of those Old witches that was taught if I put a request upon a candle then what is left after the burning is to be buried at a cross roads. So there isn't a crossroads within several miles of my cabin that doesn't have lots of little mounds of past desires. So there isn't much wax left around the place to collect. Traditionally in our family it is the time to have the bones thrown, which is a way my Full Blood Cherokee Great-Grandmother foretold how the New Year would be. She told things like one of her children would be giving birth and how her son would return from the war wounded but alive. My Grandmother on the other side of the family preferred coffee grounds. I remember seeing her setting in the kitchen turning the cup around. Everyone knew she was like her ancestors who came from Ireland where they read tea leaves. She would frown or get questioning looks on her face and usually got on the phone to discuss what she saw with her older female friends from down the road. My Mom was a woman of her today world. He chose running a company over raising a large brood of kids. Her ways were of the modern world and she rolled her eyes at the ways of the Elder women of our Clan. Now that she is in her seventies, she might fuss and discuss points of tribal history with the spirits who lived through them, but never developed the gifts of foretelling tomorrow in a cup or a lay of he bones today. I am not as talented as the older ladies of my line for I use Tarot, I Ching, and the Runes. They speak freely to me, yet, in some way I think it doesn't take as much connection as Great Grandmother had with her bag of small bones. Each year as I guess most everyone, I do the year to come spread. No spread or vision forward is complete until you reflect on your last years view and in hind sight decide how accurately you saw what was being told. That is what I am doing today. Reviewing and Reflecting, setting in the West of my Medicine Wheel where I can touch the past years. Guess that is why I felt like sharing this with you today. Looking in the rear view mirror before pulling out to begin another year. Perform this spell at sunrise on last day of the year. Light a yellow candle and call upon Mercury, messenger of the gods. Write your wishes in the form of affirmations on clean white paper. This may be in the form of a spell, prayer, or letter. After you write the spell, cut a pomegranate and sprinkle some of the seeds onto the paper. Fold the paper as you would a letter. Place it into an envelope and seal with some of the juice from the pomegranate. Speak a prayer of thanks over the burning candle before extinguishing it. Save the letter until the wishes manifest. The custom is to save your wish list until the following year; review to see what happened to your wishes before burning it in a ritual fire. Fires were set ablaze at midnight, which was the beginning of the Celtic day. Tables were laden with special foods, and the savory aromas mingled with the laughter that filled the air. In the flaring light of the fire, there was dancing and singing and joyous celebration. Groups of people held hands and danced in circles and spirals, reaffirming their connection to the eternal cycle. The word Hag, from the Greek "hagia," originally meant "holy one," as in "hagios," sacred. Most likely, this was derived from the ancient Egyptian word "heg," intelligence. Hekat, "vessel of female wisdom," the name of one of the oldest Egyptian Goddesses, was derived from "heg," as was the name of Hecate, the oldest Greek version of the triform Goddess. It is interesting to note that the sacred Stone of Scone, which rests beneath the coronation throne in Westminster Abbey, was originally called the Hag of Scone. Medieval legend tells us that this Hag was a Pagan goddess who was turned to stone after being cursed by a missionary of the new religion. The Stone of Scone cast's one's mind back to the time when chieftains and kings were selected by tribal conclaves of elder women and inaugurated over sacred stones. It is said that the stones spoke aloud to proclaim divine acceptance of the new leader. The ritual of Hagmenai still persists to this day in Scotland. There and in some parts of Northern Ireland, New Year's Eve is called Hogmanay. It is celebrated by the playing of bagpipes, the drinking of whiskey, punch, and hot-pint (hot ale spiced and laced with whiskey). Traditional foods, such as bannock, shortbread, haggis, and Scotch currant buns are eaten. The celebrations go on into the early hours of morning, the next day being a national holiday in Scotland. On the morning of Hogmanay, small groups of children go from door to door, singing. They are given small gifts, usually a cake. In the Clogher Valley, Northern Ireland, mummers with blackened faces parade around with straw or rabbit skins tied around their legs, and are called Hogmanay men. Cakes are given to them as well. A bannock is a Scottish and Northern English homemade oatcake or bread. Until this century, bannocks were made for any festive occasion. They are usually oval shaped, and cooked on a griddle. Haggis is a Scots national dish made from the minced heart, liver, and lungs of a sheep, mixed with suet, oatmeal, chopped parsley, and onion. This is seasoned and put into a cleaned sheep's stomach, which is then boiled in salt water. It is served on a large platter, surrounded with mashed turnips and boiled potatoes. Haggis means "hag's dish." Some researchers say that this is a remnant of the prehistoric rite of communion, when women ate the flesh and blood of the dead so that they could be "born again" as new children. Shortbread was originally a large round cake, notched at the edge, probably a descendant of the Yule bannock, which was notched to symbolize the Sun's rays. Traditional Shortbread 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 cup rice flour 1 cup sugar 2 cups butter Milk, if necessary Mix together the flours and sugar. Work the butter into the flour mixture with your fingers until it is well mixed. If the dough is too crumbly, it can be moistened with milk (use the milk sparingly). Roll dough on floured board to about 3/4" thickness, and cut as desired. (You can cut small shapes, or form the entire recipe into a circle). Flute the edges and prick all over with a fork. Bake at 350 degrees F for 35-45 minutes until light golden brown. Grind the herbs and orange peel in a mortar and pestle, saying: "New Year blooms in winter light, Bringing joy and love each night. With the dawn comes strength and more. Prosperity enters through my door." Add three drops of Jupiter oil to the herbal mixture, and stir seven times. Fill each ornament with a little of the herbal combination.
