Greetings.....
My personal Deity is Aset (Isis). I was always, even as a very young child, attracted to Egyptian things. I still own an ankh that I have had, literally, as long as I can remember. My first memory of Aset comes from the movie "Cleopatra". You know the movie...Liz Taylor and Richard Burton....And for years Aset wore Liz's face...silly...I know. As I got older, I read absolutely EVERYTHING I could find on Cleopatra, ancient Egypt, Sekhmet, Bastet (Bast) and Aset or Isis. I had gathered a lot of information, but it was just that....information.
Then, 4 years ago, I had an "experience". My life was changing so fast, and things were not at all going the way I would have them go. I was lost, afraid, and, I felt, alone and misunderstood. I had turned my Heart from Goddess, I was disconnected. Because of events that had transpired, (events that, by the way, I had orchestrated in one way or another) I felt betrayed by Her. I had spent 20 years in Her service and this life was my reward! Childish for a 34-year-old woman...I know.
One evening I was very upset, crying, I lay down in bed, and as my head hit the pillow I found myself lying in a river in the arms of Aset! I thought to myself...."I must have really been tired!"
And She answered...."No Beloved.....you do not sleep.....I am with you, as it has always been....You find yourself in the River of Sorrow."
I realized that I was still crying. Crying, like a child who had hurt themselves badly.
She continued...."Sob...Let these wings enfold you, let My breast be your pillow. Rest your Heart here, and lay with Me in the cleansing waters of the Nile. Let your tears fill the Nile and join the tears of those women who have known Love and loss throughout the ages. Know that the pain that you share will help to heal many. Let the mighty Nile heal your body, mind, heart and soul. Know that we are all one in pain and in joy, in Love and in loss."
And I did...for what seemed like hours. I felt as though I was in my Mothers arms. She stroked my head, She kissed me, She comforted me and I fell in Love with Aset. When, finally, I could speak I said "I MUST be dreaming!"
She said...."Dream or no matters not! One cannot turn from ones destiny. I live within you, We are One. Your life HAS changed and changes still. Grieve no more. Know that happiness and joy await you. Fear not for the young one (at that moment I saw my baby girl sleeping in her bed) she IS your Light, and, indeed, your Teacher! You have walked your Path even in those times when you believed you were mistaken. (I was seeing my self, making bad decisions, saying and doing things that hurt myself and others) When you have felt the need to judge yourself for wrong doing.....even then, you have walked your Path. Experience is necessary for Wisdom to grow. Forgive yourself....and walk on. Know that your purpose IS being revealed to you. Know that you have, and will touch others and help them to heal and grow. Be true to yourself and Goddess within. One day....you will look into your own reflection....and recognize yourself as if for the first time."
When I came back to myself, looking at the clock I saw that no more than a 20 minutes had passed. I realized that I had not been dreaming. Within the next few days, during the New Moon, I dedicated myself to Aset. In the morning, before my feet hit the floor I turn my Will over to Her. This way I know that my days are spent in Her service, doing Her Will.
That's enough for now.........
Mothers Blessings

WOW Cerredwen, I have to tell you, I get chills up my spine every time I read that! What a Beautifull recollection! I myself, don't follow just one Deity. Need to do more reading up on that. I pretty much follow the Native American Path, listening to the winds, watching the clouds (with my head in them most days!) Honoring the Sun, and Moon as they are responsible for life as well. For without them, we would not, and could not exist. I hold them in very high regard. And every day that I see them, I am most thankful and give thanks.

Merlin comes to me in my dreams often, but I don't think he is a God is he?? Naw I didnt think so. =)
I am *TRYING* to do some study up on the Celtic Trad but extra time comes pretty slim around here. Now If I could find something on Audio that would be great! Then I could study / learn while doing my stuff n things. =)

Ditto on what Blue said!!! At the risk of sounding ignorant, I do not know the name of my Deity. I only know that she is SHE, Goddess, Mother. When I would go to church with my grandmother as a small child, I would upset the Sunday school teacher by saying that God was She not He. LOL!!! I did not know the word Goddess.

Very ancient, before Asherah/Astarte. Can only be translated as "The Goddess."
What I didn't care for in some other pantheons was the fact that females had a rough go and were trounced upon quite a bit. Metis was swallowed by Zeus, for example, so he could lay claim to the wisdom of the deep and then "give birth" to Athena. I'm wondering who really gave birth here...
I figured if I went far back enough that none of the Goddess-trouncing would happen. I needed a particular deity that had to do with sea or ocean. Stumbled on her by chance when looking at the Mesopotamian region which gave me a pull for some reason.
There are variations on her name, but this one appears to be the most ancient for a seafaring bunch of people.
Elat is quite tall, and she seems a little like Godiva--naked, with lots of hair. She has large breasts and a belly covered with stretch marks (although the representation plays up her hair most) from childbearing. I was told we look alike by someone who saw her. Fascinating.
You might think of her as Shekinah, if that helps--yet I wouldn't necessarily hit the Kabbalah for a reference. El is her consort, rather than her head. In later mythology, Elat and El get mixed up with YWH. (sic?) Everyone's confused. Even the scholars. ;~)

Merry Meet Mer -
I have to tell you that I have goose bumps after reading what you posted regarding *The Canaanite Mother*.
Although new to my path, I have always known my personal deity to be She. Later I came to call her Goddess, Mother as well but never, never a name. Could this possibly be She???
Always, I have had an affinity for the sea and happily moved to Florida in 1986.
I don't know what to say right now...I'm kinda dazed.
Brightest Blessings to you,

I was looking for my **** and that's when I found her. Shhhh!
She's at pantheon.org/mythica
She came before Yaweh and Asherah, as far as I can tell. Some of the coins of the region show confusion because the depictions of YWH--which is a no-no, as you might realize--are attached to snakes. That's usually a sign of the Mother religion and you see it undone in Genesis' Fall story. (The propaganda had to start somewhere, yanno.)
She has more than one name. Ummmm, my personal conviction is that if you're meant to find her, you will. That's why I'm being such a pain in the patooties.
Besides, the person who saw her, witnessed her presence during a ritual when Elat was invoked. This person doesn't see well without bifocals, but could see perfectly when the Lady appeared.
Lots of colors. Elat's hair is all-color, btw.
She danced over the candles and whirled around a lot. Shapeshifting from large to small, that sort of thing. Smiled, too. I really don't know why she'd want to walk into the kitchen and look in the cupboards, though.

Before a few days ago, I hadn't considered linking myself with a particular deity.....but after looking around, I think if I was going to go with any one deity, it would be Brighid (Brid) whatever name you want to call her. She just seems to fit me so well, being a creative goddess. Some of you that know me well would agree with this...and I don't know if I will actually take her on as my patron, but she seems to suit me best.
